All patients were eligible to participate in the study if they met all the criteria for bipolar I disorder, and they were diagnosed with bipolar disorder according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders criteria (DSM-III-TR). Patients were also excluded if they had a history of substance abuse or had a history of bipolar I disorder. Patients were administered a single dose of Seroquel (quetiapine) at the same time. The study population was randomly divided into two groups of patients receiving Seroquel (quetiapine) at the same time, and patients were followed up every day during the study period. The primary outcomes were the proportion of patients with bipolar I disorder and the number of patients who developed bipolar disorder at the end of the study. The secondary outcomes were the percentage of patients who had bipolar disorder and the number of patients who were diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the end of the study.

Results

The study population consisted of 1250 patients with bipolar disorder and 605 patients with schizophrenia. The percentage of patients who developed bipolar disorder and the number of patients who were diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the end of the study were both significantly higher in the Seroquel group (23.1%) compared to the other groups (14.8%) (p<0.001) [Table 1].

The mean age of the patients in the Seroquel group was 39.1 ± 8.6 years, while the mean age of the patients in the Seroquel group was 46.5 ± 7.5 years. The mean duration of illness in the Seroquel group was 21 ± 10.9 months, while the mean duration of illness in the Seroquel group was 9.5 ± 6.8 months. There was a statistically significant difference in the percentage of patients with bipolar disorder at the end of the study in the Seroquel group (28.8%) compared to the other groups (20.3%) (p<0.001) [Table 2] (p<0.001).
